Iron Gates - Evans River
The Iron Gates property "derived its name from the shelf of ironstone stretching across the Evans River at the southern end of the property.
This formed a barrier or 'gate' impeding the flow between the fresh and salt water, quite often at different levels. The shelf has since been removed." This natural dam formation was actually blown to smithereens by the army back in 1914.
Evans River is approximately 20 km in length and the town of Evans Head is located at the entrance. The Evans River is connected to the Richmond River at Woodburn.
Evans River is surrounded by Bundjalung and Broadwater National Parks. The river and sandy river flats encourage a range of water sports including windsurfing, fishing, and boating
